How to use this calculator
Enter your annual health insurance premium, net self-employment profit, months you were eligible, and estimated tax bracket. Add your hourly rate to see hours of work to pay the premium.
A worked example
$7,200 annual premium, $80,000 net profit, 12 eligible months, 22% tax bracket: deduction = $7,200, tax saved = $1,584. At $25/hr, that is 5.54 hours/week of work to pay the premium.
The calculation
Deduction = min(annual premium × months ÷ 12, net SE profit). Tax saved = deduction × tax bracket. Hours to pay = premium ÷ hourly rate.
Before you use the result
This is an estimate using 2024 tax brackets and standard rules. The deduction cannot exceed your net self-employment income. Months without employer-plan eligibility only count. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Common scenarios
Use this calculator whenever you need to verify your hours, check a paycheck, or prepare a timecard submission. The result is the same arithmetic the payroll department uses, displayed in a form you can inspect.
